Work 4 Hours a Day - The Digital Hunter Gatherer Lifestyle

10 hour workdays have become the new normal.

Modern slavery is on the rise — people are working towards achieving another person’s dream.

No wonder we are living in a mental health epidemic.

Contrast this to what our ancestors did — the way nature intended for us to live.

They spent much less time working (hunting for food) than we do whilst having a better quality of life. They had more time for play, art and also to spend time together.

Our brains got adapted to this lifestyle, but we have damaged it by causing a sudden change in our work life balance.

We now have less time for play, social activities and art — all of which are essential for optimal brain function.

The digital hunter gatherer lifestyle is a gateway to freedom from modern slavery — corporate jobs which trap you into someone else’s dream.

The main principles which govern this lifestyle include:

  • Location Freedom

  • Time Freedom

  • Physical Health

  • Thirst for Knowledge

Location Freedom

It’s true that ancient humans remained in a particular territory but this doesn’t mean that they were not free to move around and live a nomadic lifestyle.

They could move to new locations in search of new food and resources.

The same could be applied to our lives:

  • More Travel = Meet New People

  • Meeting New People = More Conversations

  • More Conversations = More Knowledge

  • More Knowledge = Higher Value

Time Freedom

Your income should not be dependent on how many hours you put in.

You should be paid for your value, not for your time.

Most people have gotten used to the 40 hour work week.

Why?

Because they do not increase their value so they remain dependent upon quantity of work and not their quality of work.

I believe humans were given life to experience it fully and not be tied by a corporate job on how many times you can go on vacation in a year.

Don’t let the corporate world own you.

Our ancestors used to work on average around 30 hours a week — 4 hours a day — this is the lifestyle nature intended for humans so it’s at this point that our brain will be most happy.

Physical Health

It’s no secret that hunter gatherers were as fit as Olympic marathon runners. Their bodies were tested to the limits when running away from predators or chasing their next meal.

You too, as the modern hunter gatherer will need to exercise daily.

Again, this is what nature intended for us — to be on the move and challenge our body’s capacities.

This is how we grow both physically and mentally.

Nowadays we are not forced to hunt so most of the population has gotten comfortable and unhealthy. People sit all day at work and then go home and spend another 2 hours on their couch.

We need to bring the hunt to ourselves. Work out.

At least 30 minutes everyday.

‘’It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable’’

Socrates

Besides working out, diet is also important. Hunter gatherers ate only the essentials. Emulate this.

No fast food.

Only foods with one ingredient.

Examples

  • Meat

  • Fish

  • Chicken

  • Nuts

  • Eggs

  • Fruit

  • Vegetables

Thirst for Knowledge

Hunter gatherers were constantly learning new things:

  • Hunting tactics

  • How to build new tools

  • How to work as a team

  • How to evade predators

Their brain was constantly stimulated, and in fact, their brains were bigger than those of modern humans.

Again, modern humans have become too comfortable because they don’t need to adapt since everything is given to them on a silver platter.

The digital hunter gatherer seeks knowledge from books, podcasts and people.

Your brain is like a muscle — in order for it to grow it needs to be challenged just like your biceps, chest and back.

Why Become a Digital Hunter Gatherer

Picture this:

  • You leave with your companions at 8 a.m. to gather food or go hunt.

  • You go back to your tribe at noon.

  • Plenty of time to gossip, joke and tell stories together with your loved ones.

Even though you won’t be hunting wooly mammoths, this same type of lifestyle can be applied to the digital hunter gatherer.

8 hours sleep

4 hours working

1 hour of reading

1 hour of exercise

10 hours of freedom

How to Become a Digital Hunter Gatherer

9 to 5 Phase

Let’s say you have a 9 to 5 job like most of the population.

Use the income from this 9 to 5 to fuel your side hustle and other investments.

Steps in this phase:

  1. Pick a high income skill to learn

  2. Incorporate meal prep (healthy foods only)

  3. Invest in a gym membership or find a sport which you like

  4. Follow the routine which I have outlined in the table below

You are working on your new skill 3 hours everyday.

In one year that amounts to 1,095 hours.

Be consistent.

This will be your life for the next 2-3 years.

Transition Phase

In this phase you have become quite skilled in your side hustle and your value has now increased.

You can start to charge reasonable amounts for your service.

You will start to make a significant amount of money from your side hustle.

Steps in this phase:

  1. Transition to part time for your 9 to 5

  2. With the extra time you now have continue working on your side hustle.

Digital Hunter Gatherer

You have now learned a skill which allows you to work from your laptop and does not restrict your location.

The income from this skill has started to match the income from your full time 9 to 5 job.

Steps in this phase:

  1. Save up at least 6 months worth of your income.

  2. Quit your 9 to 5.

  3. Reduce work hours to 4 hours a day because you are now being paid for your value and not for your time.

  4. Increase time for exercise, leisure and family time.

You’ve made it.

Make sure not to get too comfortable.
